A Slow Tour of Upper Lazio with Syusy and Patrizio (1)

Joining Patrizio, we meet Domenico, a real buttero, Gigetto the bull, and we get to know the countryside of Tarquinia

In this first video of a new slow tour, we follow Patrizio as he explores the Maremma Laziale, in northern Lazio.
The same land Dante once described as infernal, harsh, and untamed – the forest of “gnarled and twisted branches” in Canto XIII of the Inferno – is today a true paradise: fertile, biodiverse, and blessed by the sea’s gentle influence.

Perhaps the Maremma Laziale even winks at the idea of a lost paradise, because here the care and work of human hands still speak the language of tradition, and the land has romantically preserved a semi-wild spirit. It’s our own Far West.
It remains the homeland of the butteri (Italy’s cowboys), of untamed horses and herds of Maremma cattle, whose great horns carve their way through the dense woods.

Patrizio met Domenico, a buttero by trade, who introduced him to Gigettoa Maremma bull with quite a story behind him…

But who are the butteri, and what do they do? Have a listen!
