Watch the third episode of our web series on widespread Tuscany

Next stop? Casentino!

Syusy’s new Slow Tour is an itinerary through the “Widespread Tuscany”. From Mugello, we make our way to Casentino!

Syusy spent the night in the heart of the Foreste Casentinesi National Park, as a pampered guest at B&B Locanda L’Imposto, hosted by Marzia.

In the morning, with the sound of the river in her ears, she sets off for a place frozen in time: Molin di Bucchio.

One of the oldest mills in the Casentino area, it stands where the Arno first meets human settlement on its descent. Passed down through the Bucchi family for over 700 years, it ceased operation in 1960 but remains perfectly preserved inside.

Mr. Claudio Bucchi didn’t want to erase its history!

A history he shares with Syusy over a meal, joined by Alessandro… who manages aquaculture at Molin di Bucchio. In fact, the mill is no longer active, but today the water is used for trout farming!

From Molin di Bucchio, Syusy heads to Camaldoli. Towards the Sacred Hermitage of Camaldoli: a place that for a thousand years has hosted a male monastic community. Women have only been allowed to enter since 1971.

If you missed the first episode, you can catch up here and join us on the journey!! He recounts the story of the Sacred Hermitage like it happened just yesterday.

It’s a story deeply tied to the history of the surrounding forest, which the hermit monks have owned and cared for over the past thousand years.

Syusy’s final stop on this third leg through Widespread Tuscany is Poppi, which overlooks the Campaldino plain. The site where the famous and bloody battle between the Florentines and the Arezzo forces took place in 1289.

Welcomed by the deputy mayor, Syusy enters the castle. The quintessential medieval fortress and pride of all Casentino!

A castle Dante himself passed through, now home to a bust honoring him. And celebrating the deep bond Dante had with these lands.
