In our Italia Slow Tour column we present the fifth and final travel story that tied for first place in the Per Caso TV Literary Award, which concluded last January. Written by Rita Leone, an experienced sailor, the story takes us on a journey to discover Sardinia from the sea – or rather, to explore the “islands of the Island”.

«Here I am again, stepping aboard to begin a new adventure – one that has lasted for more than sixty years. When I was fourteen, I decided I wanted to learn how to sail, and now, at seventy-five, I’m still out on the water. For years I chartered cabin sailboats and introduced dozens of people to this world. Some fall completely under its spell, just as I did, while others find it hostile, feel intimidated by it, and can’t wait for the experience to end.

These days, I sail on a Bavaria 39, a very reliable boat, just like her owner Marco, a good friend and the perfect companion for exploring unspoiled places.»

For many people, July is the month of holidays and new departures.
